In order to reach his goal he called for a world wide boycott against grapes in 1975. Seventeen million Americans were involved in the boycott which led Governor Jerry Brown to pass the Agricultural Labor Relations Act. In earlier years he organized strikes,marches and a boycott of merchants to protest local unempolyment. In his attempts to make a change he was imprisoned for challenging injuction against the boycott. Another action he took to achieve his goal was a 25 day fast which led to some attention to the farm worker's problems. He also led a march with 75 protesters to the capital which is Sacramento which brought attention to plight of farm workers.
